FREE GIG! Tom McRae with special guest Brian Wright(Warehouse)
win = new Window('window_id', {className: "alphacube", title: "Gig Information @ www.dolanspub.com", width:600, height:300});
win.getContent().innerHTML = "<h4> British singer-songwriter Tom McRae has been quietly moving up the ranks of the most respected songwriters in the world today after releasing four critically acclaimed studio albums over the last 9 years.
His eponymous debut album in 2000 was nominated for The Mercury Prize, a Q Magazine Award, and a Brit, and the subsequent two years of touring cemented his reputation as one the most entertaining and powerful artists touring today.
Just Like Blood, his second album was released to wide acclaim, especially in America, where every track was licensed for tv and film use, his style of music fitting perfectly the more darker output of LA’s film studios.
In 2004 McRae moved to LA, and while making his third album, All Maps Welcome, began playing regularly at The Hotel Café venue in Hollywood. The connection McRae made with fellow musicians led to the Hotel Café Tour, a travelling revue show featuring dozens of artists, which annually tours the USA coast to coast, as well as occasional forays into Europe. The tour is something of a phenomenon in the states, providing a forum for new talent that may otherwise be unable to reach a live audience on such a scale.
After signing to V2 in 2006, the following year McRae released King Of Cards, a more upbeat offering than previous albums. The demise of the label during the promotion phase didn’t diminish Tom’s enthusiasm for the fight, and he toured the album twice that year, proving a huge hit at festivals across Europe, recruiting more fans everywhere he went,
Now, after a year away from touring, during which Tom moved back to London from Brooklyn, he is about to release his fifth studio album.
The Alphabet of Hurricanes, an album in two parts, is scheduled for release in September 2009, with a second volume to follow in early 2010. It is McRae’s most ambitious album to date, recorded over three years in studios, hotel rooms, and backstage both in the US and UK. Having set up his own studio, Gunpoint, in east London, McRae has taken charge of the production once again, with his haunting melodies and poetic lyrics given a new sonic palette in an eclectic selection of powerful songs.
Tom will tour the new album with a full band, and - as his fans can attest - for an artist working in a genre often considered by the music press to be “sensitive and self-indulgent” he can take the roof off a venue with his passionate performances, as well as forging a strong humorous bond with his audience.
The Alphabet of Hurricanes Tour and album look set to further add to the cult that is rapidly springing up around this talented and dedicated artist.

‘This is a fun-filled gem through and through’
Downtown Music Gallery, New York - reviewing ‘Iive in Dublin (Auand 9009)
“It was intense, exhilarating and a credit to all concerned, with Black in
particular little short of astonishing in his range of invention. If jazz is
the sound of surprises, this was full of them”.
Irish Times
“Julian Arguelles, Ronan Guilfoyle and Jim Black produced a concert of
enthralling and frequently breathtaking music. Black in particular was
mesmerising, throwing spanner after spanner into the works from a seemingly limitless toolkit of ideas.”
Sunday Tribune
Julian Arguelles – Saxophones
Ronan Guilfoyle – Acoustic Bass Guitar
Jim Black – Drums
An international trio, featuring three of the leading contemporary jazz
musicians of their respective countries - British saxophonist Julian
Arguelles, the Irish bassist Ronan Guilfoyle, and the American drummer Jim
Black – will undertake a tour of the UK and Ireland in March 2010.
The saxophone trio has a long and important history in jazz and some of the
most highly regarded live recordings in jazz have featured this format.
Arguelles/Guilfoyle/Black continue this tradition while at the same time
reflecting the vibrancy of contemporary jazz. An international trio, featuring
three of the leading contemporary jazz musicians of their generation and
respective countries - British saxophonist Julian Arguelles, the Irish
bassist Ronan Guilfoyle, and the American drummer Jim Black – their new
recording ‘Live in Dublin’ captures the excitement and ‘in the moment’ feel
of live saxophone trio playing, and gives a taste of what is to come in
their concert performances.
Playing a programme mixing original compositions and standards, the trio’s music features a free-wheeling spontaneity and powerful rhythmic drive, with each member of the trio showing an almost telepathic response to the playing of the others - the music unfolds seamlessly with a great sense of swing and much rhythmic intrigue.

win.getContent().innerHTML = "<h4> Meath singer/songwriter Eugene Donegan released his eagerly anticipated debut album \"Little Apples\" in 2009.
With his debut album \"Little Apples\", Eugene Donegan is intent on carrying the listener with him on an ambitious trip which takes in the formation of the Roman empire, the mundane everyday life of his hometown of Navan, and even to heaven.
Wherever the destination, love is seldom far from Eugene\'s mind, and it\'s the kind that seldom works out. Dissecting failed relationships and lamenting lost love over the course of an album is a bleak prospect, but Eugene\'s stunning musical settings somehow manages to uplift the listener, or at least break their fall.
In the fragile beauty of \"Loved You Too Much\" and \"Martha\'s Field\", Eugene equals any of Ryan Adams\' haunting ballads of loss, while in the country-tinged \"Tonight Is The Night\" he echoes the honest, heart-warming delivery of his hero Kris Kristofferson. He even doffs his cap to compatriot Paul Brady in the opening bars of the ambitious \"The Gods Are With Us\".
However under the guidance of producer and collaborator Declan O\'Rourke (Since Kyabram, Big Bad Beautiful World), \"Little Apples\" charm lies in Eugene\'s ability to confidently forge a style which is uniquely his own. Eugene Donegan\'s debut marks a new voice in the pantheon of Irish storytellers, it is now only a matter of time before it is heard.

Supermodel Twins have an unerring, breezy power-pop sensibility that suggests they are bronzed Californian surfer dudes rather than pasty-faced dwellers of the grey and dreary backstreets of Frank McCourt’s ‘Angela’s Ashes’. Influenced by the likes of Weezer, Nada Surf and Jimmy Eat World, Supermodel Twins’ sound brims with moments of wry genius that owes more to the genuine pop masterworks of The Beach Boys and Burt Bacharach than its modern day imitators.
These local boys are purveyors of perfect three-minute pop songs that combine intelligent lyrics about love, lust and loneliness with infectious melodies, sinful harmonies and dramatic guitar-crescendos delivered in a Beatles-style swagger. The five-piece will preview tracks from their forthcoming debut album produced by Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan at Green and Live Sessions 24.
Also on the line-up for the last ever Sessions gig is Green and Live favourites Laminate Reno and The Vagabonds. Doors open at 8pm and admission is free.

Metallitia(Warehouse)
win = new Window('window_id', {className: "alphacube", title: "Gig Information @ www.dolanspub.com", width:600, height:300});
win.getContent().innerHTML = "<h4> As you are no doubt aware by now the lads enjoyed an exceptionally high profile of late as one of the participants in the RTE band competition/reality show, \"Karl Spain wants to Rock!\" on RTE2 TV a few months ago...
Karl Spain wants to Rock (The Scrap Metal Tour) styled itself as a journey into the oddly familiar world of tribute bands around Ireland, going behind the scenes to explore the people behind the leading acts and the alternative universe they inhabit. The concept took 5 of Ireland\'s top tribute acts and put them on tour all over the country for a week in the company of legendary mentors like Bif Byford (Saxon), Brian Tatler (Diamond Head) and Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy). Over the course of 4 nights in different venues, one band was eliminated each night by the celebrity panel of Robertson aided by Kevin Courtney of the Irish Times and RTE2 DJ Cormac Battle (Kerbdog) to find the winning act on the final night at the Button Factory in Dublin.
The winning band went on to represent Ireland and headline the Saturday night at the huge Glastonbudget festival at Thurmaston in Leicestershire in England at the end of May, closing the show with a barnstorming performance in front of 15,000 people!
----------
The opening installment saw them being introduced to the nation and making their debut in Limerick before legendary Saxon frontman and KSWTR judge on the night, Bif Byford.
The following week they were confronted with awe-inspiring guitarist, Brian Tatler, of Diamond Head fame, in the decision-making chair and also had to negotiate the treacherous shoals and rapids of the ever-critical and \'watchful\' Tullamore rock community...
The ever-resilient Metallitia successfully steered a course through this tortuous assignment and steamed on next to downtown Mullingar for the semi-final to compete for a place in the \"play-off\" at the Button Factory in Dublin!
Having survived this eliminator, the band went on to clinch their place as Ireland\'s #1 tribute band when raising all flags at the final in Dublin adjudicated by an all-star jury of Brian Robertson (ex-Thin Lizzy and Moeterhead), 2FM DJ and Kerbdog frontman Cormac Battle and Irish Times rock critic Kevin Courtney.
As a consequence, Metallitia went on to headline the Saturday night slot at Europe\'s top tribute festival, Glastonbudget in Leicestershire in England before 15,000 people. Further evidence of the band\'s performance is the fact that they were voted the best performance of the 2009 festival on the Glastonbudget web-site - no mean feat for an Irish-based band and the only non-British act at the 2009 event!
---------
Prior to this Metallitia operated as backing band to renowned ex-Iron Maiden frontman Paul Di\'Anno on his recent Irish tour in April. The lads backed up Paul for appearances in Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Dundalk & Dublin and revered local guitar supremo Gordon \"Flash\" Murphy was back in the chair as musical director for Di\'Anno in this part of the world. These shows will undoubtedly be spoken of in awe for years to come by the Irish rock fraternity.
---------
The latest highlight for the band was a guest appearance at the famous \"Vibe for Philo\" commemorative night in Dublin on January 4th, 2010. This is the renowned annual shindig to mark the premature demise of Ireland\'s original and greatest rock hero, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy who passed away on the 4th January 1986.
Metallitia have been known to close their shows from time to time with a blistering version of \"Whiskey in the Jar\" and Flash himself was, of course, a member of probably Ireland\'s best loved tribute band Thin Az Lizzy for several years.
The guys served up a Metallica-flavoured set of cast-iron, \'bona fide\' Lizzy nuggets at the \"Vibe\" such as Black Rose, Thunder & Lightning, Bad Reputation etc which raised the rafters and sent the Lizzy faithful into a frenzy...
----------
Latest news for the band is that they have been invited back to play again at Glastonbudget 2010 in Leicestershire in May after topping the poll for best act at the 2009 festival.
And not to be outdone on the home front Metallitia have also been snapped up to play at Irelands very own inaugural, tribute band-only, musical extravaganza which take place at the Cavan Equestrian Cenre on Sunday 4th July.

A majestic name for an imperious band. Hailing from Waterford, O Emperor have orchestrated a multi layered, multi faceted sound that betrays their tender years and that, with one giant leap, puts them at the forefront of our brightest talent.
Undertaking all the production duties themselves, the band have created Po, a debut single that ploughs a supremely confident furrow between classic American harmonic pop and the best of British alternative music.
Impeccably arranged, immaculately performed behind words that evoke childhood fears and adult frustrations, Po proves the band have a genuine streak of originality and self awareness that manifests itself on this stunning debut release.
\"Gentle and delicate songs, guided by intricate urgently-picked guitars, grinding electric lines, expansive piano playing, some electronic tomfoolery, and wonderfully harmonised vocals - there\'s a straightforward sincerity to the music of Waterford band O Emperor. Sounding a little like the Beach Boys, The Band, and The Smiths being digested by a cannibalistic Lee Mavers from the La\'s, O Emperor haven\'t even released an album yet and they\'re already better than many decades-old bands I could mention...\"
HOT PRESS - JULY 15th 2009
\"O Emperor sparkled like the jewels in the crown of the Waterford music scene that they are.\"
THE IRISH TIMES
\"Of all the bands I caught last night here in Dublin at the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival, the real standout was this band from Cork, O Emperor that played early on at Andrews Lane. It was warm and personal and genuine, but still has its best music ahead. Give this one some time and some sunlight and it\'s going to grow into something large\"

\"O Emperor seem uncannily older than their years. Boasting slick production along with meticulous arrangements, O Emperor have ticked off the right boxes to create a post-rock classic\"
TOTALY DUBLIN

His death left an enormous hole in the music scene but his music will ensure his legacy will stay alive eternally. And proving that an apple doesn\'t fall far from the tree, his daughter Hermione releases her new album Songs My Father Taught Me on February 26th, a record that not only pays tribute to Christie, but an album he urged her to make before he died.
Hermione Hennessy is a classically trained pianist with a voice inherited from a legend. In the past she has duetted with her father on such tracks as Mr Blue, Gettin\' Over You and If You Were To Fall.
She has spent her working life in the music industry, helping nurture and develop acts such as Kami Thompson (Richard and Linda\'s daughter) and Judie Tzuke, Feeder and The Soldiers, as well as creatively aiding a diversity of acts from Groove Armada through to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, via Will Smith and R Kelly, through her company Black and Blonde.
Now its time for Hermione to shine. Since Christie\'s death, she has been managing his back catalogue and taking care of the legacy. This album is as much about him as it is about Hermione.
Songs My Father Taught Me showcases a performer whose entire life has been steeped in the poetry and music of Ireland, with vocal stylings that remind of the likes of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, right up to the beautiful and dramatic style of Ute Lemper.
Soon after release, Hermione intends to tour, saying \"I plan to sing songs he loved, songs I grew up with, songs he wanted me to sing from when I first started playing the piano up to his passing, along with the songs that made the record. And it is my intention to take his music to the world and keep his name alive.\"
The debut single “Fall At Your Feet” will be released via iTunes on February 12th followed by the album “Songs My Father Taught Me” on February 26th.

Limerick Jazz Society presents Linley Hamilton & Derek O Connor(Upstairs)

win.getContent().innerHTML = "<h4> Linley has been on the scene for many years now having doubled up his jazz career with one in the Rock and Pop arena. Well known for his work with Paul Brady, Linley has also toured or recorded with Andrew Strong, the Commitments, Foy Vance, Eleanor McEvoy and Duke Special among others, but has somewhat left that side of his career behind to concentrate on jazz.
Having toured and recorded with Jacqui Dankworth in the ‘Noughties’ Linley has a successful weekly jazz show on BBC Radio Ulster with recent guests including Wynton Marsalis, Jan Garbareck, John Abercrombie, Walter Becker and Billy Cobham. In 2001 he released his debut album ‘Up to Now’ and toured extensively with a line up that included Dublin Saxophone phenomenon Derek O’Connor. Renowned as a bebop and hard bop player, Linley shows a love for all styles modern and has a lyrical approach to the Flugel Horn which has played a more substantial role in his work of recent years.
In 2009 Linley went ‘back to school’ and studied at DIT in Dublin under Mike Neilsen where he achieved a 1st in Master of Jazz performance and won the Student Academic Excellence Award along with it. He has recently penned a Kind of Blue Theatre Show and is touring with it in Ireland in April 2010 and embarks on a PhD in Jazz in September this year.
Derek \'Doc\' O\'Connor has played saxophone from the age of nine and turned
professional at age seventeen. His style is very much high intensity in the Bob Berg,
Michael Brecker mold and his live playing is always an exciting experience.
Derek toured with the european jazz youth orchestra in 2001 representing Ireland and
divides his time between recording sessions, touring and live gigs.
Derek has performed with many top artists including Paul Brady.Van Morrison,Chaka Khan
and Jeffrey Osborne to name but a few.He is currently the house saxophonist on \'Tubridy Tonight\'
which airs every saturday night and also \'Your a Star\' on Sundays during the autumn.
Derek has recently received rave reviews for his playing on Niall O\'Niell\'s debut album
\'As If\' with the band Reverse Trust featuring Irelands top session musicians.

Monday 19 CORK, Savoy Theatre
Tuesday 20 LIMERICK, Dolan’s Warehouse
Wednesday 21 BELFAST, Mandela Hall
Friday 23 DUBLIN, Olympia Theatre
Saturday 24 CASTLEBAR, TF Royal Theatre
Tickets for Scouting For Girls at the Dolans are €26 + booking fee and are available from www.dolanspub.com, 061 314483 and from ticketmaster outlets nationwide.
In 2008, Scouting For Girls became the biggest selling new band of the year in the UK. Having toiled for ten years unsigned, the three boys next door sold over 900,000 records of their eponymous number 1 debut album, and were nominated for three Brit Awards (British Breakthrough Act, British Single (Heartbeat), and British Live Act, to become the UK’s most successful new pop band.
Fronted by the exuberant showman, Roy Stride, Scouting For Girls quickly became renowned for their contagious piano-led pop songs (She’s So Lovely, Heartbeat, It’s Not About You, Elvis Ain’t Dead), that connected with a huge audience and reaped multiple sold-out tours. Those live shows grew as Scouting For Girls mania gripped, buoyed on by the huge radio support, the venues were upsized across the country and sold-out just as quickly. By the end of 2008, they had performed to hundreds of thousands of fans, and outsold bands twice their size in the live arena.
The initial recordings of their forthcoming second album, ‘Everybody Wants To Be On TV’, were ruthlessly scrapped by the band after the Brit Awards 2008, when they had decided it needed re-writing and re-shaping. Whole songs were dropped in Roy Stride’s mission for a collection of perfect pop songs. The resulting album, produced by Andy Green at Helioscentric Studios in East Sussex, is unshakeably bold, confident, and a genuine step up in sound that loses none of the band’s early charm, but builds and expands upon it as infectiously as only they know how to be.
Scouting for Girls release their new single This Aint A Love Song on 26th March with their album, Everybody Wants to Be On TV following on April 9th.
Tickets for their Irish tour are on sale this Friday, 5th February at 9am.

\"SO RUNS THE WORLD AWAY\" OUT 23rd April
Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band
With special guest Joe Pug
“If you love music and have a device on which to play it, you should listen to Josh Ritter…”
—Mary-Louise Parker in Esquire
\"So Runs The World Away\" the new album from renowned singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, will be released April 23rd on Independent Records Ireland. This is the fifth full-length recording from Ritter, who has been widely heralded by critics and fans alike. Of the Idaho-native, Paste magazine declares, “Put simply, Ritter is the most gifted interpreter of Americana, as an arranger and a lyricist, working today.”
Recorded over 15 months at the Great North Sound Society in Maine, with additional recording at Brooklyn’s Saltlands Studio, So Runs The World Away continues Ritter’s longtime collaboration with producer and keyboard player Sam Kassirer. Additionally, the album features the return of Ritter’s core line-up of touring bandmates: Zack Hickman, Austin Nevins and Liam Hurley.
Of the record, Ritter says, “I think of the songs on So Runs the World Away like pictures painted in oil on large canvasses. It’s a record preoccupied with the extremes of scale, from infinitesimal particles to the nearly incomprehensible distances between the head of a pin and a nebula. Where the songs felt large to me, I wanted them to be huge, both musically and lyrically. I wanted them to feel like the steel hulls of massive ships sliding by deeply from below. Where they were small, I concentrated in on the smallest details that I could and we tried to make the music and the words work together. I love writing, and this was the most fulfilling record I’ve yet written.”
A nationwide Irish full-band tour coincides with the record which is released in Ireland before it’s worldwide release in May. Additional details will be announced shortly.
Praise for Josh Ritter:
“…he sets out to carry a world of ideas on a few basic chords….there is no limit to the depth and ambition of his songs.”—The New York Times
“How refreshing and inspiring it is to encounter a young artist whose achievements match his ambitions.”
—The Washington Post
“…this is the most exuberant outburst of imagery since Bob Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”

Described as ‘one of the truest Irish voices of his generation’ by Irish music magazine, Spillane truly embodies the Celtic spirit.
Christmas 2009 brought us the follow up to Johns double platinum selling album ‘Irish Songs We Learned at School’ with a new collection ‘More Irish Songs We Learned at School’. This new collection features great Irish musicians Christy Moore and Séan Ó Sé and will get everyone singing the songs of their youth.
Not only that but last year saw Spillane release his first best of album ‘So Far So Good, Like’. This compiled some of his greatest works from the memorable anthems of ‘The Dance of the Cherry Trees’ and ‘Dunnes Stores Girl’ to songs from ‘The Gaelic Hit Factory’ and ‘Irish songs we learned at school’. A fantastic mix of songs, including two new tracks from one of Irelands much loved songwriters.
With 2009 being a stellar year for the man with boundless enthusiasm for his craft its doubtful that 2010 will be much different!
The only thing that’s for sure is that whether from the emotive tunes he whisks you on a journey with or his dynamic playful Cork wit, at the end of a John Spillane show there won’t be a dry eye in the house…
“ … funny, quirky, massively entertaining. John is a story teller, a shanachie.” Dan Regan, Founder, Kansas City Irish Festival.
Nominated for “Cork Man of the Year”
