3) Sean-nós Dance Classes
Classes in Sean-nós Dance run on Monday nights from 7pm. In this class you learn the foot drumming techniques of Sean-nós dance. One of the formative roots of many styles of percussive dance flourishing today including tap dancing, Appalachian dancing and clogging, sean-nós dance is said to be 'the jazz of traditional dance'.
During this series of classes you will learn the basic alphabet of Irelands oldest dance form. You will also engage in the creative process and learn the skills of improvisation essential to sean-nós dance.
Sean-nós, literally meaning old style, is a highly improvisational, low to the ground, rhythmic dance form in which the dancer is free to interpret the music. The dancer is the visual/percussive expression of the musical tradition. Musician and dancer are in conversation, with the conversation taking on a life of its own. Using hips and arms, the dancer beats rhythmic steps that are closely linked to music and musician. Traditionally, a dancer danced solo on the hardwood of a half door or the round top of a barrel; as a result the steps are confined to a small space. This dance form in primarily found today in Connemara.
